Q: Could you please introduce yourself and your role as the chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists Nigeria in Kano?

A: Bismillahi Rahmanir Rahim. My name is Muhammad Tukur Suleiman, Chairman of the ACPN Kano and CEO of ARAK Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Q: What is the primary mission and vision of the association?

A: Our mission is to safeguard and promote the activities and interests of community pharmacists. As reflected in our logo, our motto is "Empowering Pharmacists and Protecting the People."

Q: What are the most significant challenges faced by community pharmacists in Kano, particularly in terms of regulation and practice?

A: Regulatory activities are carried out by PCN and NAFDAC. The activities of NDLEA are primarily on Control substances. The major thing we desire is synergy and professionalism by the regulatory bodies. There is an apparent paucity of professional manpower and resources to enforce where such is needed and sometimes this is entangled in political will and readiness by the Government. The aspect of Tax collection is not actually a regulatory issue but most a times a misplaced identification and very often fraud. Multiple and wrong taxation is very common and troubling.

Q: How accessible are essential medications to the general public in Kano, and what factors influence drug availability and affordability?

A: Essential medications are generally accessible in Kano. However, affordability remains a significant challenge. The rising cost of medications due to inflation makes it difficult for many people to afford their prescriptions. This not only impacts patients but also puts a strain on pharmacies. Despite these challenges, pharmaceutical companies are finding innovative ways to maintain drug availability, such as forming partnerships to ensure continued supply.

Q: What strategies is the association implementing to combat the issue of counterfeit drugs in the market?

A: As community pharmacists, we play a crucial role in the distribution of medications. To combat counterfeits, we strongly encourage our members to adhere to proper distribution channels and source medications only from reputable and trusted suppliers. This helps to minimize the risk of encountering counterfeit products. We emphasize the importance of adhering to these principles even during challenging times.

Q: How do you view the potential of telepharmacy in improving access to pharmaceutical care in Kano?

A: Telepharmacy holds significant potential for improving access to pharmaceutical care. This includes services such as electronic prescription generation and transmission, which can streamline the medication delivery process. The PCN is currently working on establishing a robust regulatory framework for online pharmacies to ensure patient safety and quality of care. This is a crucial step towards embracing the digital transformation of healthcare. During a recent trip abroad, I witnessed firsthand the benefits of a paperless healthcare system, where everything from prescriptions to test results was managed electronically.

Q: What measures is the association taking to address the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance?

A: Addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires a multi-pronged approach. We emphasize the importance of responsible antibiotic use among our members. This includes promoting restrictive prescribing practices and ensuring that antibiotics are only dispensed when clinically necessary. We strive to educate our members on the appropriate use of antibiotics and the potential consequences of overuse.

Q: What guidelines do community pharmacists adhere to, and how are they enforced?

A: Community pharmacists adhere to the guidelines and regulations set forth by the PCN, as outlined in the Compendium of Standard Pharmacy Practice and the PCN Act of 2022.

Q: How does the current regulatory framework impact the profession, and what reforms would you like to see?

A: The current regulatory framework can have a significant impact on the practice of pharmacy. I believe that a more proactive and collaborative approach to regulation is necessary. Rather than solely focusing on punitive measures, the focus should shift towards fostering a culture of compliance and continuous improvement.

Q: What emerging trends in pharmacy do you foresee?

A: As mentioned earlier, online pharmacy is an emerging trend with the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery. Additionally, we are witnessing the increasing integration of primary healthcare services into community pharmacies. This includes services such as family planning and vaccinations.

Q: What advice would you give young pharmacists aspiring to make a difference in the field?

A: My advice to young pharmacists is to remain dedicated and committed to excellence. The field of pharmacy is constantly evolving, and it requires continuous learning and adaptation. I encourage them to pursue further education and training to enhance their skills and knowledge.
