Pharmacist Dangwani shares her passion for pharmacy, the YPG's key initiatives, and her advice for aspiring young pharmacists.

What initially sparked your interest in the field of pharmacy? Was there a specific event or person that inspired you?

I'm Pharmacist Salma Adamu Dangwani, Kano State PSN-YPG Coordinator. My interest in pharmacy was sparked by curiosity about how medicines work and their ability to save lives. Witnessing a pharmacist counsel my late uncle, who passed away from diabetes, was the turning point. The combination of compassion and expertise inspired me to pursue this career.

Can you briefly explain the mission and vision of the Young Pharmacist Group (YPG) within the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria?

The PSN-YPG's vision is to develop individuals who can drive positive change locally, nationally, and internationally. We aim to improve the nation's health and see pharmacy's continuous development as an indispensable profession.

What are some of the key activities and initiatives undertaken by the YPG to engage young pharmacists?

The YPG organizes capacity-building workshops, conferences, mentorship programs, community health campaigns, research, outreaches, and networking events to support young pharmacists' personal and professional growth.

What are the key benefits of joining the YPG for student pharmacists and recent graduates?

YPG Membership gives access to mentorship, career guidance, skill development workshops, and networking opportunities that can set them apart in their professional journey.   

Does the YPG offer any unique networking opportunities or mentorship programs for its members?

The YPG connects members with seasoned pharmacists and peers through structured mentorship programs, career fairs, and conferences, fostering professional and personal relationships.   

What are the biggest challenges faced by the YPG in achieving its goals?

The YPG faces challenges such as limited funding, inadequate engagement from members, and bridging the gap between academia and pharmacy practice.

How is the YPG adapting to the evolving needs and expectations of young pharmacists in the digital age?

The YPG leverages digital platforms for webinars, online mentorship, and virtual networking, ensuring programs are accessible and aligned with modern expectations.   

What are the future plans and aspirations for the YPG in terms of expanding its reach and impact within the Nigerian pharmacy profession?

The YPG aims to establish stronger collaborations with industry stakeholders, expand its mentorship network, and promote leadership opportunities for young pharmacists in Nigeria.

What message would you like to convey to pharmacy students considering joining the YPG?

How can pharmacy students actively participate and contribute to the activities of the YPG?

Pharmacy students can volunteer in community outreach programs, attend workshops, attend mentorship programs, and contribute innovative ideas to YPG activities to build their skills and networks.

What are your personal motivations for serving as the coordinator of the YPG?

I'm driven by a passion for empowering others and a desire to see young pharmacists succeed in their careers, fostering growth within our profession.

What advice would you give to young pharmacists starting their careers in Nigeria?

They should prioritize lifelong learning, seek mentorship, and stay adaptable. The pharmacy profession offers vast opportunities, but success requires dedication and collaboration.

What can delegates expect from the upcoming PSN-YPG National Conference?

We have a lot coming with both the YPG conference in June and PSN Conference in October/November. Expect great conferences, prizes, networking, and mentorship programs.
