The role of pharmacy students in shaping healthcare policy is often underestimated. Jonah Bonaventure Alidor, a pharmacy student from Bayero University Kano recently concluded his tenure as the National Chairperson of the Political Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Committee (PASE) of the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS) National. In this exclusive interview, Alidor shares his experiences, insights, and aspirations for the future of pharmacy in Nigeria.

RX: How would you describe your overall experience as the National Chairperson of the Political Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Committee?

My tenure as Chairperson of the Political Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Committee (PASE) of PANS National was a transformative experience. It provided me with opportunities to advocate for the pharmacy profession while fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders in mainstream politics. Leading the PASE Committee was both challenging and rewarding.

RX: What were the most significant achievements you were able to accomplish during your tenure?

We successfully hosted a webinar themed 'Strategic Positioning as Pharmacy Students: Navigating Politics, Leadership, and Governance.' Additionally, we launched a comprehensive nationwide data collection of Nigerian Pharmacists in mainstream politics.



RX: What were the biggest challenges you faced in your role, and how did you overcome them? 

One major challenge was gaining the attention of stakeholders amidst competing priorities. To address this, we shifted from email communication to WhatsApp or phone calls and cultivated personal relationships with them.

RX: What do you consider to be the most important lessons you learned during your time as Chairperson?

As Chairperson, I learned the importance of teamwork, persistence, and the value of building a strong network before the need for action arises.

RX: How did your committee work to advocate for the interests of pharmacy students and pharmacists on national and local levels?

The PASE Committee is primarily responsible for championing and advocating for policies that enhance the education and welfare of pharmacy students, as well as monitoring policy development. During my tenure, the committee, in conjunction with the 49th National President, engaged with several political stakeholders in this regard.

RX: How did you engage with policymakers and other stakeholders to influence healthcare policy decisions?

Pharmacists play an indispensable role in healthcare, and the PASE Committee is committed to advocating for reforms and sustainable healthcare policies. As Chairperson, we engaged notable stakeholders within the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter and beyond through the 49th National President.

RX: What strategies did you use to raise awareness about the role of pharmacists and the importance of pharmacy education?

Although the PASE Committee collaborated with other committees, such as the Committee on Professional Development, to execute some projects, raising awareness about the role of pharmacists and the importance of pharmacy education was a joint effort of all committees of this administration. This was achieved through a series of webinars hosted by Comr. Melody Okereke as the 49th PANS National President.

RX: How did your committee foster relationships with various stakeholders, such as other professional organizations, government agencies, and pharmaceutical companies?

Through the nationwide data collection launched by the PASE Committee, we built partnerships through formal agreements and regular engagement with critical stakeholders, contributing to the success of the National Convention.

RX: How did you engage with students from different pharmacy schools across Nigeria to ensure their voices were heard?

Upon my appointment as Chairperson, I ensured that every pharmacy school in Nigeria had at least one or two representatives on the PASE Committee to involve them in our activities and programs.

RX: What advice would you give to future leaders of the Political Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Committee regarding stakeholder engagement?

To future leaders, I would advise staying informed, cultivating empathy, and prioritizing the building of a solid network. Always listen to those you represent.

RX: What are the biggest challenges facing the pharmacy profession in Nigeria today?

The major challenges facing the pharmacy profession in Nigeria today are inadequate healthcare funding, lack of recognition for pharmacists' roles, and limited career opportunities. This is precisely why the Political Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement Committee was established: to create a vibrant and informed community of pharmacy students well-versed in politics, leadership, and governance. Without our involvement in mainstream politics, the situation will remain unchanged.

RX: How do you see the role of pharmacy students in addressing these challenges?

Nigerian pharmacy students can drive change by participating in advocacy initiatives like the PASE Committee, leveraging technology, and engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations.

RX: What are your hopes for the future of pharmacy in Nigeria?

I hope to see pharmacists recognized as integral healthcare providers with expanded roles in public health and pharmaceutical innovation. I envision a country where pharmacists are not merely drug dispensers but assume leadership positions in politics, particularly in the legislative arm of government, to enhance healthcare reforms and sustainable policies.

RX: What advice would you give to aspiring pharmacy leaders?

Aspiring pharmacy leaders should develop a clear vision, remain adaptable, and prioritize continuous learning. They should build relationships across diverse disciplines based on interest, trust, and shared goals.

RX: What are your future plans after completing your tenure as Chairperson?

I am passionate about Industrial Pharmacy, Drug Discovery, Nanomedicine, Global Health, SDGs, AMR, Politics, Leadership, and Governance. I am open to exciting opportunities in these areas. However, I aim to continue advocating for healthcare reforms and seek opportunities to contribute to the pharmacy profession on a broader scale.
