NAFDAC Coordinator Calls for Quality Assurance Units in Industries

At the NAFDAC Kano State office, the State Coordinator, Kasim Idrissa Ibrahim, called for the development of quality assurance units within industries, emphasising the importance of establishing systems that support product quality, regulatory compliance and the protection of public health.

Functional quality assurance units play an important role in ensuring that products meet established standards, identifying quality-related problems and strengthening compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. The call also underscored the need for industries to invest in the personnel and systems required to maintain consistent product quality.

The National NAIP Chairman appreciated NAFDAC's collaboration, particularly its participation in the recently concluded NAIP Kano Cup. He encouraged the agency to continue its regulatory work and remain committed to doing what is right in the interest of public health and the pharmaceutical sector.

He further emphasised the need for a stronger working relationship between NAFDAC and industrial pharmacists, noting that NAIP Kano could serve as a platform for bringing both parties together to improve mutual understanding and facilitate constructive engagement.

The National Chairman stressed that NAFDAC should not be viewed as an enemy of the pharmaceutical industry but as a partner in ensuring the quality, safety and compliance of regulated products. He encouraged continued dialogue between regulators and industry professionals to address shared challenges and advance standards across the sector.

NAIP Discusses Specialist Pharmacist Training Initiative with DMCSA

At the Kano State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency, the National NAIP Chairman briefed the Director-General, Pharm. Ghali Sule, on a proposed initiative involving UNICEF, NAIP Academy and ARC ESM to train pharmacists for specialised units within pharmaceutical industries.

Under the proposed arrangement, pharmacists would receive specialised training facilitated through the initiative and subsequently be deployed to industries that request professionals with the relevant expertise. The programme is intended to help address skills gaps in the pharmaceutical workforce while enabling participating industries to access trained personnel for specialised functions.

According to the proposal presented during the visit, UNICEF is expected to fund the participating pharmacists for an initial six-month period. The initiative is expected to provide opportunities for professional development while supporting industries seeking to strengthen their technical capacity. Further implementation details would depend on the programme's final arrangements and participating partners.

The National Chairman also highlighted the potential relevance of the initiative to DMCSA, suggesting that a supply chain expert could be deployed to the agency to support its operations, subject to the programme's deployment arrangements.

The discussion brought attention to the value of specialised pharmaceutical expertise in medicines and medical consumables supply chain management. Appropriate technical capacity in this area can support procurement planning, inventory management, distribution and the efficient availability of essential health commodities.

Strengthening Institutional Partnerships for Pharmaceutical Development

The courtesy visits reflected NAIP's commitment to strengthening relationships with regulatory authorities, drug enforcement agencies and public health institutions while identifying areas of mutual interest.

The engagements highlighted the importance of collaboration between regulators and pharmaceutical professionals, the establishment of effective quality assurance systems in industries, and the development of specialised skills to meet the evolving needs of the pharmaceutical sector.

Through continued engagement with institutions such as NDLEA, NAFDAC and DMCSA, NAIP seeks to promote constructive partnerships that support professional development, regulatory compliance and improved healthcare delivery.

The discussions also underscored the potential role of industrial pharmacists beyond manufacturing, particularly in quality assurance, supply chain management and other specialised functions essential to a stronger pharmaceutical and healthcare system in Nigeria.
