The Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS), Bayero University Kano, successfully hosted the maiden edition of She Leads Pharmacy 1.0, on Saturday, 11th July 2026. The event, themed
Bridging Barriers: Women Leading the Future of Pharmacy,
brought
together female leaders in pharmacy and healthcare for an engaging panel discussion
aimed at inspiring young women to embrace leadership with confidence, resilience,
and purpose.
The panel featured Dr. Sa'adatu Abubakar Sarauta, Assistant Secretary of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN); Pharmacist Salma Dangwani, Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) Coordinator, Kano Chapter; and Dr. Safiyya Borodo, Fellow of the West African College of Pharmacists and Financial Secretary of the Association of Lady Pharmacists (ALPs).
The discussion began with each panelist reflecting on their first leadership experiences, many of which started from seemingly small roles such as class monitor, assistant class representative, and social prefect. They emphasized that leadership is a journey that often begins with accepting small responsibilities and serving diligently wherever opportunities arise.
A major focus of the discussion was the importance of visibility and confidence. The panelists encouraged young women to confidently showcase their achievements and abilities while remaining humble. They also stressed the need for women to build meaningful professional networks, including with men, viewing them as collaborators rather than competitors, while continuing to support and uplift one another.
Speaking on mentorship, the panelists highlighted that effective mentorship often begins at home through parents, teachers, and early role models before extending into professional relationships. They encouraged students to intentionally seek mentors who will challenge, guide, and inspire them throughout their careers.
The conversation also explored the gender-related barriers women encounter in leadership and healthcare. While acknowledging these challenges, the panelists emphasized that resilience, competence, and faith remain powerful tools for overcoming obstacles. They further discussed the importance of balancing professional aspirations with personal and family responsibilities through clear priorities, effective time management, and a reliable support system.
Sharing lessons from their leadership journeys, the speakers identified qualities that every aspiring leader should cultivate, including a willingness to learn continuously, openness to constructive criticism, emotional maturity, resilience, and the ability to overlook distractions while remaining focused on long-term goals.
The panel also addressed the often-overlooked topic of self-care, reminding participants that leadership is sustainable only when personal well-being is prioritized. They encouraged women to intentionally make time to rest and recharge through activities such as spending time at the spa or salon, dining out, getting adequate sleep, or simply taking moments to relax. Proper personal hygiene, self-care, and maintaining a healthy home environment were also emphasized as important aspects of holistic well-being.
Following the panel discussion, participants attended a sensitization session on proper menstrual pad disposal, where practical guidance was shared on menstrual hygiene and environmentally responsible disposal practices, reinforcing the importance of personal health and community hygiene.

The summit concluded with a powerful message encouraging young women to step forward into leadership, believe in their abilities, remain confident without arrogance, and pursue positions of influence with courage and integrity. Participants left inspired to break barriers, embrace opportunities, and become leaders who will shape the future of pharmacy and healthcare.
She Leads Pharmacy 1.0 served as a platform for learning, mentorship, and empowerment, reinforcing the belief that when women are equipped, supported, and encouraged, they are well-positioned to lead meaningful change within the profession and beyond.
