Every house needs order. Every debate needs direction. Every Parliament needs a voice strong enough to command attention and steady enough to remain neutral. In PANS-BUK, that voice belongs to Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Sani, the Speaker of the Pharmacy Parliament, final-year student, and the man who holds the gavel with calm confidence.
From classroom leadership to campus legislation, his journey has been marked by responsibility, decisiveness, and an unshakable belief in structure, rules, and service to the students he represents. Today, he takes us inside the chambers, into the mindset of the Speaker himself.
THE INTERVIEW
1. Can you introduce yourself... your name, background, and where you’re from?
"I am Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Sani by name, a final-year student and Speaker of the Pharmacy Parliament. I hail from Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State.
My educational career started from home, where I attended Wudil Model Primary School, holding several positions such as House Prefect, Health Prefect, Special Duties, and Maintenance. I continued my education, and after writing my exams, I gained admission into several schools, including International Model Abuja, Unity School Adamawa, and GTC Wudil, of which I opted for GTC Wudil. I spent 3 years in the junior category before moving to Dawakin Kudu Science College for my senior secondary education. From there, I proceeded to study Pharmacy in 2018."
2. What early experiences prepared you for leadership?
"From the beginning, I have always been a leader. Just as I mentioned, I have held several leadership positions from the classroom to the community. I surround myself with visionary and capable individuals, and they also see those qualities in me. They recommend me to take charge and handle responsibilities like that.
One thing I strongly believe in leadership is the power of teamwork. For one to succeed, he has to be ready to learn and work with others, listen to their opinions, and communicate well with them."
3. Why Pharmacy?
"Destiny brought me into pharmacy first, but I assure you, pharmacy is exactly what I would choose 100 times if I will be taken back. One thing I like most about the profession is its diversity across different areas of practice. I love to explore and do things differently. I don’t just follow trends.
Look at how old the profession is, yet it continues to align itself with every test of time. I am confident that we, too, will come with something meaningful to contribute to humanity."
4. What has studying at BUK taught you?
"Yes, I have learned so much here at BUK. It is neither the beginning nor the end that will define your career, consistency is the key. If you want to be great, you must start early and remain consistent. Another important lesson is to show respect to everyone. It is true that life can change at any moment, and many things, including people, are not the same as when we first arrived."
5. What challenges shaped you academically?
"This huge stress and the massive load of materials to read have shown me the true power of teamwork. There are things I believe I would have been left behind on if not for my classmates, but look at where I am now. All my success is a combination of my own effort and the hard work of my friends."
6. Which field of Pharmacy interests you most?
"As far as pharmacy is concerned, I have always been interested in the field of drug discovery and development. As I mentioned earlier, I love to explore, and this is the path I believe I will be pursuing."
7. How do you balance academics and leadership?
"I have to keep emphasizing the power of teamwork. No matter how big the responsibility is, with a little support from others, you cannot imagine how far you can go."
8. What motivated you to join the Parliament?
"I have been involved in the parliament since 400 level. Ours functions more like a system of checks and balances. We are guided by a governing document, which I strongly dislike when anyone steps outside its provisions, especially for personal interest. As the Speaker and the most senior official in the parliament, I am in the right position and have full authority to enforce these laws."
9. How would you describe the Parliament under your leadership?
"We are still developing the system, but at least we are doing better than in the past. We create bills, listen to the public, and engage in activities like these, all for the welfare of the students."
10. How do debates and motions shape decisions?
"Yes, I am the Speaker of the Parliament. Debates and motions are what define us as a House. We make decisions based on the opinion of the majority. You see, I don’t even have a voting right except in the event of a tie."
11. How do you maintain fairness during disagreements?
"Like I mentioned, our purpose is the welfare of those we represent. As long as we reflect that, we learn to control our emotions and let justice prevail."
12. What values guide you as Speaker?
"Honesty, dedication and sense of responsibility."
13. What contributions has Parliament made?
"We enforce regulations in financial spending and introduce policies for revenue generation. You can attest to part of our work, we recently sought public opinion in the PANS group on how the association can be restructured or improved in any area where people feel the system has fallen short."
14. What reforms are you proud of?
"I am proud of all what we did and many more reforms are coming over soon. As we await congress to approve and give us a go ahead."
15. What limits the association most?
"The level of commitment of every official in the association. But we have to give them value first and show them the worth of what they are doing."
16. What needs to change among student leaders?
"The way we look at problems. What are we doing differently. Discuss the solution rather than just the problems."
17. What do you do for fun?
"I like to play games. I eat and sleep a lot."
18. Any hidden talents?
"Yes, so many talents that I am only just beginning to discover myself 😂"
19. Who inspires you?
"I was more inspired by military leaders, such as Gen. Abacha, IBB, and the likes of Gen. Danjuma. I don’t like it when a leader is so constrained that he cannot make tough decisions, no matter how important."
20. What instantly lifts your mood?
"Food wooo 😂"
21. What do you hope to achieve before leaving office?
"I want to make the parliament fully functional, ensure it has its full authority, and leave a lasting legacy."
22. How has being Speaker shaped you?
"Being speaker will get to show you that you are beyond managing projects but people. Also taking this big responsibility will change you through confidence boosting and learning real problem-solving skills."
23. What advice do you have for aspiring parliamentary leaders?
"Going into a parliamentary position is valuable, you learn and connect with others. But you must be willing to do things others may not like in order to truly uphold your oath."
CONCLUSION
